Twitch Rival, Beam, Gets Renamed to Mixer

Beam is a streaming service similar to Twitch, that last year was bought by Microsoft. Since then they have added Beam into Windows 10, and Xbox One. Well today they announced that they are changing the name from Beam, to Mixer. They said that they felt that with the Beam name that they were unable to grow and expand into every market around the world, so they chose Mixer as their new name because it represents what they love about the service, how it brings people together.

One of the big things that they are touting with Mixer, is the ability to interact with streamers in almost real time, so compared with the 12-15 second delay on Twitch, Mixer is actually live.

Also launching alongside the new name is Co-Streaming. Starting today, they are launching the ability for up to 4 streamers to combine their streams into a single Mixer page. So like the image above shows, you can have 4 different people, even spread across 4 different locations, all playing together and streaming for a centralized experience, they don’t even have to be playing the same game!

Microsoft is also Launching a Mobile app (currently in beta) called Mixer Create on iOS and Android to allow users to self broadcast on the go. It is launching publicly on Android today and invite only through TestFlight on iOS. This will allow people to stream not just mobile games, but all kinds of other experiences as well.

Mixer is also getting its own Xbox One page on the dashboard, so starting today, for those who are Xbox Insiders, they will see a page full of streamers and streams all happening that they can get in on at the touch of a button.

Microsoft also announced that they will be streaming their E3 Press Briefing in 4k Ultra HD, and for those with the proper setup, they can watch it on Mixer in a special edition broadcast with all kinds of goodies and digital bonuses for those who watch on that platform.

They released a whole bunch more, in which you can get all the details in the video above.

Twitch To Be Acquired By Amazon, Is Now Official

Twitch-Logo-720-1030x579

Twitch CEO, Emmett Shear has confirmed that Twitch will in fact be bought by Amazon. Rumors earlier this year had Google, or Youtube actually, buying the huge video-game streaming service. But today we have confirmation that Amazon will be purchasing them.

In a an open letter, the CEO states that Twitch will remain seperate, but that now with Amazon’s resources, they aim to give us a better Twitch experience. A Copy of the letter is below

Dear Twitch Community,

It’s almost unbelievable that slightly more than 3 years ago, Twitch didn’t exist. The moment we launched, we knew we had stumbled across something special. But what followed surprised us as much as anyone else, and the impact it’s had on both the community and us has been truly profound.

Your talent, your passion, your dedication to gaming, your memes, your brilliance – these have made Twitch what it is today. Every day, we strive to live up to the standard set by you, the community. We want to create the very best place to share your gaming and life online, and that mission continues to guide us.

Together with you, we’ve found new ways of connecting developers and publishers with their fans. We’ve created a whole new kind of career that lets people make a living sharing their love of games. We’ve brought billions of hours of entertainment, laughter, joy and the occasional ragequit. I think we can all call that a pretty good start.

Today, I’m pleased to announce we’ve been acquired by Amazon. We chose Amazon because they believe in our community, they share our values and long-term vision, and they want to help us get there faster. We’re keeping most everything the same: our office, our employees, our brand, and most importantly our independence. But with Amazon’s support we’ll have the resources to bring you an even better Twitch.

I personally want to thank you, each and every member of the Twitch community, for what you’ve created. Thank you for putting your faith in us. Thank you for sticking with us through growing pains and stumbles. Thank you for bringing your very best to us and sharing it with the world. Thank you, from a group of gamers who never dreamed they’d get to help shape the face of the industry that we love so much.

It’s dangerous to go alone. On behalf of myself and everyone else at Twitch, thank you for coming with us.

Emmett Shear, CEO

I haven’t really had a chance to process this newest development, but as of right now I suppose if they leave Twitch to be twitch still and only help the service become better, then that is a great thing. Of course whenever there is a deal like this, the concern is that they will in fact mess it all up. So here is hoping that in this case, things only get better.

Nvidia Announces the Tegra Note, a tablet platform based on Tegra 4

Tegra-Note-front

So Nvidia has announced what appears to be a reference tablet platform design. The Idea here being that they come up with the design for the hardware, software, OTA Updates, and their partners (eVGA, PNY, etc) build and distribute them. It is not unlike how they design GPU’s, by building reference designs and then having their hardware partners build them and bring them to market. So what is it about the Tegra Note that you should be excited about? Well here are the specs for the platform:

Processor Tegra 4 mobile processor with quad-core Cortex-A15 CPU and 72-core GeForce GPU
Display 7-inch HD IPS LCD display (1280 x 800)
Camera Rear 5MP and front VGA webcam
Storage 16GB storage with microSD expandable up to an additional 32GB
Audio Front-facing “HD Audio” stereo speakers with a unique bass-reflex port
Stylus Chisel and Brush tips for natural writing and broad strokes
Peripherals Micro HDMI connector to drive big screen TV videos and gaming
OS 100% Android with latest version of the OS
Software Updates Over-the-air software updates directly from NVIDIA
Battery Life 10 hours HD video playback

Also users get OTA (Over the Air) Updates provided directly by Nvidia, thus making sure everyone on the platform has the latest and greatest software running on their tablets.

Also of note, Nvidia has given us a list of unique features that they are bringing to the Tegra Note platform, they are as follows.

  • Ultra-fast performance — Powered by Tegra 4 with a 72-core GeForce GPU and quad-core Cortex-A15 CPU with a fifth battery-saver core, making Tegra Note the world’s fastest 7-inch tablet.
  • Superb stylus — NVIDIA DirectStylus technology transforms a normal stylus into an incredibly responsive experience with finer point and broader stroke control. It also comes bundled with apps for convenient, stroke-based note taking.
  • Exceptional sound — NVIDIA PureAudio technology offers rich, deep audio — including the widest frequency range in a tablet — through front-facing stereo speakers with a bass-reflex port.
  • Groundbreaking camera — The camera uses Tegra 4’s processing power and Chimera computational photography architecture to deliver stunning new features. Tegra Note also brings SmugMug’s Camera Awesome app — one of the top camera apps on iOS — to Android. Camera Awesome delivers exclusive Tegra 4 features like tap-to-track and 100 fps video with slow-motion playback.
  • TegraZone gaming — Delivering unmatched gaming, NVIDIA TegraZone provides easy access to Tegra-optimized games with visual effects that aren’t available on other tablets. Tegra Note also supports a variety of game controllers for console-class gaming.
  • Great battery life — 10-plus hours of HD video playback.
  • Accessories galore — An intelligent slide cover flips and bends to support and cover the tablet. It also lets the tablet be set up in three distinct positions using built-in magnets for added flexibility. The DirectStylus Pro Pack enables a variety of writing styles with interchangeable tips. And Bluetooth capabilities turn the tablet into a game controller.

Over the next few months we will be seeing Tegra Note tablets rolling out around the world, eVGA and PNY in North America; EVGA, Oysters and ZOTAC in Europe; Colorful, Shenzhen Homecare Technology and ZOTAC in Asia-Pacific; and XOLO in India.

And it starts at a suggested retail price of $199. This is in hopes of getting more people to buy into the platform, all of which is running 100% on Android.

We will be filling you in on more details when they are available to us.
