Albion Online Headed Into Final Beta

Albion_Online_Final Beta_Art_s

Albion Online is a sandbox MMORPG in a similar vein to Ultima Online. They are creating a game similar to that, but with a new modern twist on the formula.

Albion_Online Screens_Reputation

Currently the game is in beta until mid July, then it will be offline while they add in the final changes, before heading into the final beta on August 1st.

Albion Online is a giant open sandbox and thanks to a system of “you are what you wear” you can truly transform yourself into anything you want, just by changing the clothes you are wearing. In this way you can be a farmer dealing with your crops, to a bad ass archer just by changing your clothes. Thus allowing any player to truly play however they want.

They will be adding in three new, bigger biomes (area’s) for the final beta, as well as a reputation system. In the reputation system, if you are not nice, that could hold consequences such as guards hassling you or even arresting you depending on your reputation.

When the Final Beta of Albion Online goes live, all accounts will be reset to zero, with all Founders getting the perks from their Founder’s Packs, as well as the gold bought through the website credited to their game account.

The Oculus Rift’s Recommended PC Specs released

oculus rift

Today in a blog post, Atman Binstock; chief architect and technical director for the Rift, dropped the skinny on what kind of hardware you are going to need in order to get what he called “the full Rift experience”. And fair warning, it is not for the faint of heart, there are going to be a LOT of people looking to upgrade in order to play games properly on the Rift. So without further ado, here are the recommended specs to get “the full Rift experience”

  • NVIDIA GTX 970 / AMD 290 equivalent or greater
  • Intel i5-4590 equivalent or greater
  • 8GB+ RAM
  • Compatible HDMI 1.3 video output (required)
  • 2x USB 3.0 ports (required)
  • Windows 7 SP1 or newer (required)

Like I said, not for the fair not heart as those are some fairly steep requirements, and we imagine that a lot of people will be looking to upgrade some hardware over the next 6-10 months before the Rift is released.

They also went on to say that they are going to be using those specs over the “lifetime of the Rift”, and as time goes on, naturally that hardware or the equivalent will come down in price. They are using this as a standard so that “Developers, in turn, can rely on Rift users having these modern machines, allowing them to optimize their game for a known target, simplifying development.”
He also went on to explain some of the resolution and latency details of the consumer model;

A traditional 1080p game at 60Hz requires 124 million shaded pixels per second. In contrast, the Rift runs at 2160×1200 at 90Hz split over dual displays, consuming 233 million pixels per second. At the default eye-target scale, the Rift’s rendering requirements go much higher: around 400 million shaded pixels per second. This means that by raw rendering costs alone, a VR game will require approximately 3x the GPU power of 1080p rendering.

You can read the whole, very detailed blog post over here.

Still no word on the pricing for the Rift when it is released sometime in Q1 of next year, but it is great to start seeing more details trickle out.

Blizzard Announces Overwatch, A Team Based First Person Shooter.

Overwatch_Poster_Final

At Blizcon this weekend, Blizzard announced their first new IP in almost 17 years. That game is called Overwatch, a FPS that kind of looks like a fresh take on the whole Team Fortress 2 formula coming to the PC. They released this absolutely incredible cinematic trailer for the game, that honestly looks like something Pixar could have made, yes it is that good, take a look below. Nobody does cinematics like Blizzard, just amazing.

Currently they have announced 12 playable characters for the game, all with their own gameplay style and unique feel. There seems to be your classic tanks, and medics, alongside newer more exotic type characters like an archer and a samurai looking character. Battles take place in a variety of levels, and usually have some sort of team-play element besides just kill the other team. There appears to be capture and hold, some defend this area, and I am hearing there is even a Protect this thing as we move through the level type mission. They look to be trying to have a good variety in the gameplay and with the large character roster a little something for everyone. You can check out some gameplay in the trailer below.

This is pretty huge stuff, as Blizzard hasn’t made a completely new IP in a LONG time. I think Diablo was the last new IP that Blizzard had created and every game that they have made since then has either been a sequal, or a game using an existing IP; Hearthstone, Heroes of the Storm etc. The fact that we are finally seeing Blizzard doing something that is not only new, but also something they have never done before; they have never made a FPS game, is very exciting. If Blizzard can give this the same kind of love and polish that we have seen from them in the past, well that is a very exciting thought. I can’t wait to get my hands on Overwatch and give it a try.

If you are as excited about this as I am, you can sign up for the closed beta coming early next year, right over here,on the Official Website.

We also have some screenshots for your viewing pleasure as well below.

No release date has been set, and no platform besides the PC has been announced as of yet.
