John Carmack, Creator of Doom, Officially Leaves id Software

john carmack2

Today it was announced that Doom Creator and long time Uber Programmer, John Carmack has Officially left id Software. In an official statement, id’s studio director Tim Willits told IGN:

John Carmack, who has become interested in focusing on things other than game development at id, has resigned from the studio. John’s work on id Tech 5 and the technology for the current development work at id is complete, and his departure will not affect any current projects. We are fortunate to have a brilliant group of programmers at id who worked with John and will carry on id’s tradition of making great games with cutting-edge technology. As colleagues of John for many years, we wish him well

Carmack, who was actually one of the co-founders of id, had recently joined Oculus as the CTO, but had remained at id in some capacity. Now this appears to be the end of that, and we appear to be seeing Carmack going away from games and developing more tech in the Oculus.

We wish him the best at Oculus, and can’t wait to see the exciting things that will be coming from that relationship.

New Indie Publisher, Renegade Machine Starts Up

Renegade Machines logo

So, our friend Tom Ohle from Evolve PR and Khaled Ibrahimi, Cinematic Producer of Killzone 3 and longtime developer, have started a new Indie Publishing Studio called Renegade Machine. They have created this new studio to help indies find success. Using Tom’s knowledge of media and PR and Khaled’s knowledge of development, they intend to be the publisher that can help indies in whatever manor they may need it. As Tom puts it,

Perhaps a better answer is that we want ultimately want to help developers wherever we’re needed. I’ve spent a long time in video game PR/marketing — 12 years and counting — so certainly we’re able to help devs on the promotional side. My cohort Khaled Ibrahimi has spent his career on the other side of the coin — development, that is — and as such we’re able to help with production issues, dev pipelines, managing a virtual team and everything else you need to do to get a game out the door. We’ve also both been around the block enough times to be able to consult on business matters, make connections, help with distribution and so on.

We realize that developers often have a negative image of publishers: they force ideas on you, take too much money or just plain suck. We want to use our experience in working with publishers to build an appealing publishing option for a wide range of indie needs. To that end we’ve pulled together a survey. If you’re an indie dev, we’d really appreciate a few minutes of your time so we can truly understand what you’re looking for in a partner.

These guys are looking to change how publishers work with studio’s, bring new exciting games to market, and to really change the gaming landscape. If you want to learn more or are a developer looking to get in touch with these guys, head over to their website – Renegade Machine.

You can also follow them on Twitter:

I can’t wait to see the games that come out of this, it sounds exciting, and we wish them the best of luck!

codg

Activision this morning announced, that Call of Duty: Ghosts has sold more then $1 Billion into retail on the first day of release. Since being released yesterday, it has moved into the #1 spot on Xbox Live, according to Microsoft. Activision has also stated that the average play session on Xbox 360 has been longer on Ghosts then either Black Ops II or Modern Warfare 3 during the same time period. They also went on to state that Call of Duty: Ghosts is Gamestop’s Most preordered Next Gen Title, and that Activision saw more then 15,000 midnight launch events around the world for the title. The Full press release is below.

SANTA MONICA, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Activision Publishing, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Activision Blizzard, Inc. (Nasdaq: ATVI), announced today that the company sold more than $1 billion of Call of Duty®: Ghosts into retail stores worldwide as of day one.

Call of Duty is by far the largest console franchise of this generation,” said Bobby Kotick, CEO of Activision Blizzard. “More people have played Call of Duty this year than ever before, logging four billion hours of gameplay. And in the last 12 months, Call of Duty®: Black Ops II, including its digital content, generated more revenues than any other console game ever has in a single year. Although it is too early to assess sell-through for Call of Duty: Ghosts, it’s launching at a time when the franchise has never been more popular.”

Millions of people are already playing Call of Duty: Ghosts online. Since its release yesterday, Call of Duty:Ghosts has moved to the #1 spot as the most played game on Xbox Live, according to Microsoft. Additionally, Activision confirmed that on the Xbox 360 videogames and entertainment system from Microsoft, average player sessions for Ghosts have been longer than either Black Ops II or Call of Duty®: Modern Warfare® 3, during the same time period.

Call of Duty: Ghosts launched at 15,000 midnight openings around the world. Fans around the world shared their excitement in social media, with Call of Duty-related terms trending an astounding 20 times globally on Twitter in the last 24 hours.

Ghosts is an amazing game which ushers in the next generation of Call of Duty. The team at Infinity Ward has delivered yet another epic thrill ride in the campaign, and what I think is our best multiplayer game yet,” said Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activision Publishing. “This is the must have launch title for the next generation of consoles, and we expect Call of Duty: Ghosts to be the most successful launch title for the Xbox One and PS4 by a wide margin. In fact, according to GameStop, Call of Duty: Ghosts is their most pre-reserved next gen title.”

Call of Duty: Ghosts is out now across PC, PS3, Xbox 360, Wii U and I even saw it for sale for the PS4 when I was in the store yesterday.

A very interesting way to look at the used game issue.

Used Games banner

The issue of used video games is a big one right now. Everyone is up in arms about it, due to the fact that the new generation of consoles is right around the corner, and they have yet to announce how this is going to work. I came across this video earlier and I thought it brought up some very good points. While I am not sure if I agree with all of it, I think the author pretty much nails it on the head, in explaining why, when it comes to video games, used games are a real issue. Take a look at this video below and feel free to tell me what you think in the comments.

Review: Mark of the Ninja – Xbox Live Arcade

A ninja is powerful yet fragile. Quick but deliberate. Mark of the Ninja is a stealth platformer that puts you in control of a Ninja who’s clan is in danger of extinction. Observe your enemies from the darkness, manipulate them with simple yet versatile tools, and experience what it is to be a Ninja. From the award-winning studio that brought you Shank, Mark of the Ninja is a game about finesse, manipulation, and sacrifice.

Mark of the Ninja is a completely fresh gaming experience, a 2D stealth action platformer unlike anything else . The basics are simple, remain shrouded in darkness and become invisible to your enemies. The main objective of the game is be remain unseen, stay out the light and avoid making noise as to avoid detection. Of course this is all accomplished using your stealthy ninja skills, while clinging to walls and ceilings, hiding in air vents or crawl spaces, ducking in door ways or behind various objects and swinging around using your grapple hook.

While in stealth if you sneak up on an unsuspecting foe you’ll be rewarded with an especially graphic and violent cut scene of you executing your mark. Deliver a silent kill and earn extra XP, hide the body and earn more. Being a true stealth game sneaking past your enemies without killing them offers even more rewards and is an acceptable play style. Starting the game with only a basic set of moves, executions, and distraction items you earn medals that you can then use to purchase new unlocks. New items and techniques open up new options for dealing with your foes, early in the game you can only peak through grates but after a couple levels you unlock the ability to do executions from these hiding places.

The animation and graphics in Mark of the Ninja is beautiful, you’ll often forget you’re playing a video game and think you’re watching an R-Rated anime. The unique art style and world is stunning and sets it apart from everything else out there. The cut scenes are beautifully animated and flow seamlessly between the stages. The execution animations are graphically intense making those stealth kills especially rewarding.

While not the longest game, Mark of the Ninja does have a lot of replay-ability. Earning all the unlocks and completing side challenges will have you coming back for more. A new game plus mode will also add extra challenge to the campaign while letting you keep all your upgrades and unlocks right from the get go.

While the story isn’t amazing and some stages in the later half of the game can be platforming nightmares this isn’t enough to tarnish an amazing and unique experience. Mark of the Ninja is easily one of the best games I’ve experienced this year. For those of you worried about creativity in games disappearing worry not and look for amazing indie gems like Mark of the Ninja to carry the flame of creativity and innovation.
